Demographic aspects of cohabitation in Great Britain

This paper describes the trends in cohabitation over the last twenty-five years using information from the General Household Survey, GHS, and then provides a summary of some key results on cohabitation, such as the stability of cohabiting relationships. The paper then provides some first results from a recent pilot survey aimed at investigating the circumstances surrounding the ending of couples living together - due to the end of accommodation sharing and relationship breakdown. Finally, some analyses are presented on cohabitation, accommodation and property ownership using data from the GHS. These four sets of analyses not only provide fuller background to the characteristics and circumstances of cohabitation for general information, but also chart the progress made and planned in extending the range and type of questions asked on cohabitation in the GHS. These improvements, it is hoped, will provide relevant information for a wide variety of users, and especially for professionals in the fields of social policy and family law.
